Red Light Therapy Dose, Distance & Timing

If you've tried red light therapy and weren't sure it was doing anything, the problem is usually how the panel was used, not the panel itself. Standing too far back, running sessions far too long, or chasing the "perfect" time of day are some of the most common missteps.

Victoria Dorsano, health coach and founder of Be Victorious Coaching recently put together a clear, no-hype breakdown of the three factors that decide whether red light therapy works for you: dose, distance and timing. She uses her own Rouge Pro G4 as the example throughout. Watch it below, then read on for the key takeaways.

Key takeaways

• Presets that take the guesswork out of dosing (2:34). The Pro G4's built-in presets aren't arbitrary. Each one is matched to the dose its goal calls for. Victoria points out that the skincare preset runs 4 wavelengths at 80% for 10 minutes, while deeper-tissue presets use all 8 wavelengths at full output for 20 minutes.
• More isn't always better (2:50). Red light follows a "biphasic" dose curve: too little does nothing, and too much reduces the benefit. That's why the Pro G4 manual recommends no more than 20 minutes of treatment within a 6-hour window.
• Start low and build up (3:00). We recommend starting with a one- or two-minute session to see how your body responds, then working up to the full recommended session length.
• Output holds up with distance (3:55). A full-size panel behaves like a wall of light, not a single bulb. In Victoria's example, intensity dropped only about 20% when she moved from 6 inches to 2 feet away.
• Use distance to choose your target (5:13). Think of distance as a targeting dial, not a strength dial. Stand about 6 inches away to concentrate light on deeper tissue, 10–12 inches for general use, or 18–20 inches for broad skin coverage.
• Consistency beats timing (7:09). There's no magic hour for red light. How often and how regularly you use it matters more than the time of day, so pick a time you can stick with. A stand makes it easy to keep the same distance every session (5:37).

1. Dose: treat red light like a dose, not a lightbulb

The number that matters is energy delivered per area, measured in joules per square centimetre (J/cm²). Panel size sets how much of your body you treat at once, and panel intensity sets how long a session takes to reach the dose you're after. That's why your panel's own recommendations matter so much: the manufacturer has already worked out the session times for that specific hardware.

Everyone responds a little differently, so use the recommended ranges as a starting point and pay attention to how you feel.

2. Distance: closer is deeper, farther is broader

Many people assume that stepping back makes a panel dramatically weaker. With a large panel like the Pro G4, which is roughly 3 feet of light, that isn't really the case. What distance mostly changes is what you're treating. Standing closer concentrates light on a smaller area, and standing farther back spreads it over more of your body. Whatever distance you choose, keep it consistent from session to session.

3. Timing: the best time is the one you'll stick to

Victoria looked for research directly comparing morning and evening sessions and didn't find any. What the research does point to is frequency: regular sessions spread over weeks beat a few perfectly timed ones. One practical note: panels are bright, so wear eye protection, don't look directly into the light, and notice whether evening sessions help or hurt your sleep.

Keep expectations realistic

We appreciate that Victoria is upfront about what red light therapy isn't. It isn't a replacement for medical treatment, surgery or physical therapy, and it won't fix a problem caused by how a joint is being loaded. Used consistently and correctly, it's a simple addition to a broader wellness routine.
